Irish PM's join Elite IPMA Worldwide Group

In a competitive world organisations need to meet high expectations of their stakeholders regarding the management of projects, programmes and project portfolios. It is crucial for them to develop their actual project management competence and aspire to acquiring the highest possible  level. Such is the case for the two project professionals who have recently acquired the pinnacle of IPMA certification (IPMA Level A) and joined the small but exclusive and elite group worldwide that have this status.

Here we give brief profile of both and their rationale for seeking this platinum standard   accreditation.

Derek Tierney,
RPA & Dept. of Finance

Contemporary evidence from the current climate reinforces the economic imperative of project management excellence as a perquisite for sustaining competitive advantage for successful organisations. In good times and bad, there is clear recognition that strong project management systems underpinned by professionals possessing sound knowledge, capability and experience drives projects towards successful outcomes.

IPMA’s advanced competence-based process has allowed me to continuously improve, incrementally and purposefully and apply project management competence elements to deliver highly successful and valued projects. This accreditation  as one of only six level-As in the country has assisted in securing my current role in the Department of Finance which involves setting up a Project Management Office for the Mortgage Arrears Project.

This IPMA Level A certification now provides me with formal peer recognition and validation of the significant experience that I have gained during my career to-date. It has also allowed me to demonstrate my commitment to excellence in project management, affirm my ongoing commitment to follow leading project management practices and has given me an opportunity to grow and develop within the profession”.

Steven Mcgee,
Managing Director, Stewart

With increased competition coming from abroad and a slowdown with engineering work in Ireland, the time was right for me to invest seriously in the certification in order to benefit both myself and my organization.

“I am very pleased to have gained Certification to Level A (Certified Project Director) from the International Project Management Association, which is a verification of my level of Project and Program Management competence. Given its International recognition, I believe it is a very important certification which benchmarks the standard at a global level and it is a valuable career development attribute.

This internationally recognised qualification will enable me to promote and facilitate further the  deployment of PM expertise. One of the main benefit of IPMA, and its competence based certification model, is that it allows us  to train and accredit individuals, at different levels of the IPMA Certification, right across the organization.

“It’s really about delivering to the client and we have to be able to add value to the client by value engineering the project and project managing to a much higher standard; we need to bring to the table something our competitors can’t offer.”
