The Faculty

Led by Ed Naughton, one of the world's most respected figures in project management, the faculty combines academic excellence with practitioner experience. The faculty spans finance, business administration, computer science, engineering, industrial relation and human resources, law, management information systems, and marketing. Many faculty members consult for international corporations, and are officers of global institutions and academic forums on project management. Our research efforts produce work of national and international importance with a focus on the contribution of project management to competitiveness.

Ed Naughton, BE, CEng, FIEI, IPMA-A, PMP® is the director general of the Institute of Project Management and also the vice president of the IPMA (International Project Management Association). He has extensive experience in project management - as a practitioner, leader, writer, coach and instructor. Ed has been at the forefront of the development and promotion in Ireland of project management as a unique discipline. He has worked as a project management consultant with many of Ireland's leading companies including EDS, AIB, ICI, Waterford Wedgwood, An Post, etc. He has designed and developed all of the Institute's project management courses and has published many articles and papers on the topic.

Professor Sebastian Green is Head of the Department of Management and Marketing in University College Cork. He supports the principle that an association between an academic institution and an independent educational body ensures professional development of the highest quality and the most practical application. His module on the programme examines in an in-depth manner organisational strategy, its influences and the role of project & programme management therein.

Mary McKinlay, BA, FAPM, Adjunct Professor of Project Management ESC at Lille University has worked in Project Management for over 25 years as practitioner, researcher and trainer. She started her career on the Tornado aircraft project and subsequently has worked on many large programmes, from civil aircraft to submarines. She was instrumental in the introduction of Lifecycle Management in GEC-Marconi and has carried out external assessment of Project Management Plans for many major projects. She is a Governor of the University of Greenwich and also an active member of Institute of Directors Kent. Her areas of expertise are Project and Programme Management, & Risk Management, and her special field of interest is Aerospace and Defence.

John Vickery, DipEng, MSc, C.Eng, F.IEI, FIMechE was formerly Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and is now Registrar at the Institute of Technology Tallaght. He has extensive experience in quality systems and project management and has managed a number of EU funded projects. He is currently participating in an EU funded LIFE project with the City of Rome in developing an action plan for the city for the reduction of GHG emissions by 6.5% of the 990 levels by 2012 as set by the Kyoto Protocol for Italy. He has over 10 year's industrial experience in the areas of manufacturing, quality, maintenance and management.

J P Murtagh is Former Logistics Director for Waterford Crystal and is responsible for the successful delivery of all the company's outsourcing requirements. He was the project manager in Waterford Crystal's outstanding initiative for the "Marquis" range. This project is used as a case study on the programme to illustrate the benefits of project management in bringing strategy to reality.

Dr David Hillson is an international risk management consultant and Director of Risk Doctor & Partners. His speciality is risk technology transfer, assisting organisations to develop in-house risk processes, and he is a popular conference speaker and author on risk, winning several awards for his papers. His is a Fellow of the UK Association for Project Management (APM) and Fellow of the UK Institute of Risk Management (IRM) as well as being a member of the Chartered Management Institute.

Frank Nugent, Degree Education and Training, MA Adult Learning and Development, MIITD is an experienced mountaineer, explorer and expedition leader. He was deputy leader of the first and successful Irish Everest Expedition, followed in the footsteps of Shackleton across the Island of South Georgia and sailed the Northwest Passage in the wake of Crozier and McClintok. He is an expert in occupational training, assessment and accreditation and is manager of Curriculum, Assessment and Innovation Team with the Training Services Division of FAS in Dublin.

John Hynes, BSc(CompSci), MSc(Management) is the former Chief Executive of An Post and director of National Lottery. He was formerly General Manager of Dublin Gas before becoming Managing Director of Dublin Bus. As a chief executive, the translation of the strategic vision into reality is of paramount importance. He describes the role of project management and the project office as a methodology for delivering this transaction in a focused and orderly manner.

Tony Brady, BComm, MSc (Management), Dip Industrial Engineering specialises in the challenges of a changing work environment. In his education and consulting practice, he has focused on designing and implementing strategies for organisational change, leadership development programmes and high performance team development processes. His work at the coalface with Ireland's major organisations in both the public and private sector ensure that the practicalities of real life are fully represented in his training programmes.

Dr. Donncha Kavanagh is an engineer with a masters degree in project management and lecturer in the Department of Management at University College Cork. He has extensive experience in the application of project management techniques - planning, scheduling and cost control - on a wide variety of high profile projects in Ireland. The marriage of his applied background and academic view points supports strongly the philosophy of the entire programme.

Jim Mogan, BSc, MBA, specialises in the negotiation and communications aspects of project management. He has established a reputation as an international trainer and has prepared programmes in all aspects of change management in the United States, Europe, and Australia. He has worked in senior project management capacities in the Brewing, Automotive, and Customer Services sectors, with Guinness, Dunlop, American Management Association, and Management Europe.

Ruth Buckley, MBA, IPMA-B, PMP® is Head of Information Systems at Cork City Council and formerly worked with Bank of Ireland. She has lead many high risk and complex projects such as YR 2000 and Euro change over. Her particular areas of interest are programme and portfolio management which necessitates an ability to maintain strategic focus while implementing project management standards and methodologies. She has participated in writing examination questions for International Examination and is also a lead assessor in the IPMA Four Level Certification System.

Fred Barry, BE, Dip Mgt, Dip Legal Studies, BL, IPMA-A is a lawyer, chartered engineer and is chief executive of the National Roads Authority (NRA). He is also the Chairman of the Conference of European Road Directors, and director of the National Development Finance Agency. His expert inputs to the programme centre on the contracting process from requisition through to execution and contract close out.

Dr. Martina Ryan, IPMA-B, PMP® With over 15 years industrial experience in the areas of Project Management, Continuous Improvement (Lean/6-Sigma) and R&D, she has extensive experience in project management as a practitioner, leader, instructor and mentor. Martina has led a range of multi-site projects across Europe and America in the pharmaceutical industry including product transfers, relocation of facilities and continuous improvement culture change. Her experience has led her to work with a variety of public and private organisations, including environmental, construction and instrumentation. She specialises in facilitating and managing implementation of practical project management and improvement solutions.

Eoin McGettigan is the former Chief Executive of Lifestyle Sports. Lifestyle Sports is a 100% Irish owned company, and have been operating since 1979, with over 70 stores throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland. Prior to that he was Chief Operations Officer for Dunnes Stores. He was appointed Chief Executive of the Own Stores division of Super Valu-Centra in 1995 and was responsible for the successful integration of L&N Supermarkets, acquired by the Group, into Super Valu-Centra, in December 1996, and also joined the main board of Musgrave Group.

Jean O'Halloran, BA, MA is Programme Leader and lecturer on the BA in Creative Digital Media at the Institute of Technology in Tallaght. She has 20 years experience in teaching and research in the area of communication and cultural studies and has managed a range of both EU and industry funded projects in these areas. She has also designed and delivered short programmes in effective communication for several organisations both within the public and private sectors.

John Cahill, BComm, MSc (Mgmt), IPMA-B is the former Finance Director of the PM Group, Ireland's largest engineering design and project management organisation, with over 1,500 personnel. Prior to joining the PM Group he worked in a very senior project management capacity on some of Ireland's highest profile projects including the Aughinish Alumina Plant construction and the conversion of Dublin city to natural gas. He also has had experience with Bechtel, one of the worlds' largest construction and project management organizations. He specialises in project management education with particular emphasis on cost and procurement management. He is also a member of the IPMI certification board where is actively involved in the assessment of certification candidates.
