In the past five years the management of projects has risen to a new prominence. Projects are now seen as critical to success in all three sectors: public, private and non-profit.Unfortunately, the evident wastage through improper selection of projects and/or their improper formulation and execution is immense and represents a serious drag on our economies. An emerging school of thought believes that the solution to this wastage is to be found in effective Project Portfolio Management, ("PPM").

The Institute of Project Management and UCC Department of Management and Marketing have been undertaking a benchmarking survey for the last six years with the aim of building a detailed picture of the profiles of project management practitioners.

With concerns about the environment and “green practices” continually in the news and seemingly weaved into every agenda, a recent UK survey provided an ideal opportunity to see what practitioners are thinking and gauge the current reality. The respondents were questioned about the impact of environmental issues on their day to day business activities and the attitude of their organisation to green issues. Given the high profile associated to this subject a surprisingly small 9% of respondents said they are measured against green objectives.

The IPMA met in the Netherlands (The Hague) last week-end to discuss the on-going affairs of the organization with particular emphasis being focussed on certification. The certification panel meeting on Friday was attended by representatives of in excess of 40 countries with Ireland being represented by John Vickery and Ed Naughton. John, who is an engineer by background, is the registrar at the Institute of Technology, Tallaght and is a member of the certification board here in Ireland.
A very positive result to emerge from the meeting was that despite the tough economic climate, certification numbers grew by in excess of 20% last year.

What role do they play in each phase of the life cycle and what is its relative importance? There is a strong body of opinion that a project manager’s greatest contribution to the project effort is at the front end of the project.

Ireland's International Engagement in Project Management
The project management leaders from 50 countries gathered in Dublin in September to attend the Council of Delegates meeting of the IPMA (International Project Management Association). The Institute of Project Management is proud to have hosted this event which brought together the profession's thought leaders from Africa, Asia, Europe, North & South America.
